(Question No. 762)

Mr Laurie Ferguson asked the Minister for Schools, Vocational Education and Training, upon notice, on 18 September 1996:

(1) Further to his answer to question 360 (Hansard , 28 June 1996, page 3216) and the listing in the September 1996 issue of the Parliament House Communications Directory of a third Departmental Liaison Officer (DLO) attached to his ministerial office, (a) when and (b) why was the officer appointed to his office.

(2) Is the position of Parliamentary Liaison Officer (PLO) related in status and duties to that of a DLO.

(3) How do the positions of PLO and DLO differ.

(4) How long has the PLO position existed and is it unique to his department.

Dr Kemp —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) Further to my answer to question 360 (Hansard , 28 June 1996, page 3216) the listing in the September issue of the Parliament House Communications Directory shows that there are still only two DLOs attached to my ministerial office.

(2) No.

(3) The PLO in my office is a ministerial staff member employed under MOPS. The DLOs are departmental officers.

(4) The PLO title has existed in my office since 15 April 1996. The position is held by a ministerial officer, not a departmental one.
