Mr DONDAS
—I address my question to the Minister for Veterans' Affairs. Is the minister aware of young Australians' growing interest in honouring and remembering this country's wartime legacy? Has the government put in place any initiative to encourage and promote this interest?
Mr BRUCE SCOTT
—I thank the honourable member for Northern Territory for his interest, along with the interest of the member for Paterson. I advise the House that today I had the pleasure of participating in the inaugural schools wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at our national War Memorial.
Mr Melham
—Was it a Peter `Reith' laying ceremony?
Mr ACTING SPEAKER
—Order! The member for Banks! That is inappropriate.
Mr Tanner
—Demand a withdrawal.
Mr ACTING SPEAKER
—Order! The member for Melbourne!
Mr BRUCE SCOTT
—The school that participated today was the Metford Public School, and those students, I understand, are in the gallery today. They are from the member for Paterson's electorate. I want to say that they played an invaluable part, and I must congratulate them on the way they conducted themselves at the War Memorial this morning.
The interest from the next generation Australians, particularly from schools and students, is something that I and members on this side of the House are well aware of. Their thirst for knowledge about why we commemorate Anzac Day and why we continue to commemorate as a nation those great sacrifices that were made is something that I think we in this parliament ought to foster. We ought to make sure we give them that information.
The Metford Public School's participation in the inaugural schools wreath laying ceremony is the first of many in Canberra. Next week, on 24 September, the St Phillip's College from Alice Springs, in the electorate of the Northern Territory, will be in Canberra. They will participate in the second wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
This is an initiative of this government. Schools that come from all over Australia will be able to participate in this simple ceremony, which will be conducted each Tuesday at the War Memorial when there are students from schools around Australia.
