Mr O'KEEFE —I have a question for you, Mr Acting Speaker, on the same topic. You have, in some of your directions in the last two or three days, given more emphasis to the need for questions and answers to be directed through the chair. I was intending to raise the same issue that the member for Denison raised. I ask you to review the tapes of today's question time and you will see that, despite your insistence on compliance with the standing order, the situation is that ministers, when they are in full flight, are ignoring your request and yelling almost directly at members of the opposition. When members of the opposition are doing the same thing, you are pulling them up.

My request to you, Mr Acting Speaker, is that you review the tapes of today's proceedings and look particularly at the performance of the Minister for Industrial Relations in the last question and redress, perhaps, the way you are approaching this question.

Mr ACTING SPEAKER —I thank the honourable member for Burke for his question. On this issue of addressing remarks through the chair, I suggest that if you consult the Hansard , as you suggested I might consult the tapes, you will find that earlier this week I made the comment that the word `you' should be deleted from the vocabulary of both front benches.

I have applied this standing order pretty fairly, as I did in the time before I became Deputy Speaker. Quite frankly—although I will give more consideration to it—my initial response is that—

Mr Tanner —That's the National Party for you.

Mr ACTING SPEAKER —The member for Melbourne might be a little careful. My initial response is that remarks, whether they be questions or answers, should be addressed through the chair. This is the standing order and I will endeavour at all times to uphold the standing orders. But I will take your question on notice.
