(Question No. 4929)

Mr Tickner asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs, upon notice, on 25 November 1986:

Is he able to advise on the fate of the four students who were alleged to be members of the Fretilin and who unsuccessfully sought political asylum in the Netherlands after taking refuge in the Dutch Embassy in Jakarta on or about 22 October 1986.

Mr Hayden —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

Four East Timorese students, Antonino Gonsalves, Joao Da Camara, Albilio Serena and Fernando Soares entered the Dutch Embassy on 20 October, seeking Dutch assistance for them to travel to Portugal. (The Netherlands handles Portuguese interests in Indonesia.) All four applied for Portuguese passports and left the Embassy on 22 October, after assurances were given by the Indonesian Government that they would not be prosecuted and could continue their studies undisturbed. I understand that the students are awaiting the outcome of their passport applications.
