(Question No. 4817)

Mr Lloyd asked the Minister for Transport, upon notice, on 20 October 1986:

(1) Will the new woodchip arrangements for Tasmania reduce the income of Tasrail by 20%; if not, how will the new arrangements affect Tasrail income.

(2) If the new arrangements will increase Tasrail's deficit, what action is the management of the Australian National Railways Commission taking to reduce the deficit.

(3) What are the projected deficits until 1989-90.

Mr Peter Morris —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) & (2) The Australian National Railways Commission (AN) has advised me that the new arrangements will involve a reduction in the tonnage of woodchips carried by Tasrail. However, an expected overall increase in nett tonne kilometres for this commodity will result in a consequent increase in revenue.

(3) AN has advised that projected deficits for Tasrail operations until 1989-90 are:

1986/87-$19.3M

1987/88-$17.7M

1988/89-$15.5M

1989/90-$15.9M
