(Question No. 4473)

Mr Andrew asked the Minister for Trade, upon notice, on 22 August 1986:

(1) What quantity of brandy in litres of alcohol has been imported to Australia from New Zealand in each month since January 1986.

(2) What was the annual production of brandy in New Zealand from New Zealand grapes in 1985-86.

(3) Is Article 14 of the Australia New Zealand Closer Economic Relations Trade Agreement relevant to imports of brandy from New Zealand.

Mr Dawkins —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) There were no recorded imports into Australia of brandy from New Zealand for the months January to May 1986. ABS statistics record that in the month of June 1986, 1,134 litres of alcohol of brandy were imported into Australia from New Zealand.

(2) There is no production of brandy in New Zealand. I am advised that the above mentioned imports consists of brandy sourced from France and bottled in New Zealand.

(3) The brandy imported from New Zealand to date in 1986 did not qualify for preferential treatment under the CER Trade Agreement as it did not meet the rules of orgin requirements. Accordingly Article 14 of the Agreement is not relevant to these imports.
