Mr Shipton asked the Minister for Sport, Recreation and Tourism, upon notice, on 15 September 1983:

(1) Did the Australian Tourist Commission announce that Mojo Australia had been appointed to handle large tourist promotion advertising campaigns in both Australia and the United States of America; if so, what is the estimated cost of each campaign.

(2) Is Mr Paul Hogan likely to be used as a presenter as part of the Mojo Australia strategy; if so, (a) what theme or themes will he be using and (b) is he providing his services free of charge.


Mr John Brown —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) Yes.

The Australian Tourist Commission's Chairman, Sir Peter Derham, announced on 18 August 1983 that Mojo Australia had been appointed as the ATC's advertising agent in Australia and the West Coast of the United States.

The Australian domestic campaign is estimated to cost a minimum this financial year of $1.5m which will be jointly funded by ATC, the States and industry.

The United States of America campaign was initially estimated to cost a minimum of $1.579m of ATC funds. The Government decided to increase this by $2m to take advantage of the awareness of Australia brought about by the winning of the America's Cup.

(2) Yes.

(a) The campaign strategy is being developed by the Domestic Tourist Committee, a joint Commonwealth and State Government and Tourism Industry Committee, in liaison with the agency. The campaign concept and theme have not been finalised as yet.

(b) Yes.
