Inquiry into eligibility for Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal

The Defence Honours and Awards Appeals Tribunal is conducting an Inquiry into eligibility for the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.

Federal Member for Murray, Sharman Stone said “In 1965, the Government of the Republic of Vietnam created a Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. The medal was conferred upon a range of countries that supported the Republic during the conflict including Australia.”

The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal is issued for service in the prescribed area of operations in Vietnam during the period 31 July 1962 to 27 January 1973.

There were a number of qualifying criteria specified by the Republic of Vietnam which have been maintained by the Australian Government. The current eligibility criteria require a person to have completed a minimum period of 181 days, either continuous or aggregate, in the prescribed area of operations, unless:

 killed on active service (KIA);  wounded in action (i.e. classified a battle casualty and evacuated as a result of these wounds); or,  captured and later released or escaped.

The Terms of Reference of the Inquiry specifically direct the Tribunal to investigate and report on:  application of the eligibility criteria for the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal over time;

 unresolved issues with the application of those criteria; and,  how any future claims for this award should be administered.

Sharman Stone encourages interested parties to make a submission to the Tribunal before the closing date of May 31st 2013. Submissions can be emailed to: DHA.Tribunal@defence.gov.au or posted to: Defence Honours and Awards Appeals Tribunal
