THE HON BOB BALDWIN MP SHADOW MINISTER FOR TOURISM SHADOW MINISTER FOR REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT 25 February 2013
AUSTRALIAN GETAWAYS SHOWCASED TO OVER 40 MILLION CHINESE VIEWERS Shadow Tourism Minister Bob Baldwin has welcomed the broadcast of the first two episodes of the travel series Global Getaways, featuring Hamilton Island and the Gold Coast, which have been broadcast to over 40 million Chinese viewers. More Australianâbased episodes are planned. Mr Baldwin has worked closely with the show’s producers over the last year, securing a major marketing coup by locking in at least 10 Australian content episodes, in a bid to take full advantage of the burgeoning Chinese tourism market. “China is our most rapidly developing tourism market, and the Coalition is determined that we maintain, or increase, our share of that market,” Mr Baldwin said. “I am working hard to make Australia a more attractive place for Chinese visitors, and the Coalition’s plan to remove the carbon tax will further help the tourism industry by taking costs off airlines, hotels, restaurants and all parts of the industry. The Coalition has a plan for a stronger, prosperous, more diverse economy - a 5âpillar economy - and the services sector is one of those critical pillars. “I am not waiting until I am the Tourism Minister in a Coalition government to make a difference in the tourism industry,” Mr Baldwin said. Each episode of Global Getaways includes a welcome message from Mr Baldwin, highlighting the importance of Chinese tourism, and promoting local attractions of interest to Chinese travellers, such as Victoria’s Sovereign Hill. Global Getaways Executive Producer Earl Roberts said that focus group research in China indicated Australia was among the top three destinations Chinese travellers were interested to learn more of and visit. “The Chinese continue their love affair with Australia, its beautiful beaches and islands, its exciting and cosmopolitan cities, wonderful food, fascinating outback and friendly people. “We plan on filming as many episodes as possible in Australia because there are so many fascinating stories to tell,” Mr Roberts said.
