FINANCE AND PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION LEGISLATION COMMITTEE - 23/11/1995 - DEPARTMENT OF THE PARLIAMENTARY REPORTING STAFF - Program 1--Hansard

Senator McGAURAN --As you would know, there was controversy--even anonymous letters were sent around to senators--in relation to when the Department of the Parliamentary Reporting Staff was, I think, combined with the Parliamentary Library. Is that working well now? Has the controversy settled down?

Mr Templeton --Mr Chairman, the background to that is that there was a bill to replace the Department of the Parliamentary Library and the Department of the Parliamentary Reporting Staff with a single new information services department. That bill passed through the House of Representatives in November 1993. It was not proceeded with in the Senate. In fact, last week the bill was discharged from the Notice Paper. So the two departments are remaining as separate entities. That was some time ago but the issue in that sense is dead.

Senator McGAURAN --Thank you for updating me. I was not on top of that one.

CHAIR --As there are no questions on programs 2 and 3, we will go to program 4.
