Information, analysis and advice services

The Parliamentary Librarian is a statutory officer within DPS appointed by the Presiding Officers. 1 The Parliamentary Library provides Members with information, analysis and advice. The Library also maintains a wide variety of information resources such as newspapers, maps and the Electronic Media Monitoring Service which enables Members to obtain desktop access to radio and television programs broadcast in Canberra.

The Presiding Officers are assisted in policy-making and other matters by the Library Committees of the Senate and the House of Representatives, generally sitting together as the Joint Library Committee, which like the Joint House Committee, does not normally submit reports nor have executive power and pursues a purely advisory role. 2

The statutory position of Parliamentary Librarian was created by the Parliamentary Service Amendment Act 2005 .

See ‘Library and House Committees’ in Ch. on ‘Parliamentary committees’.
