Elections and the electoral system / THE ELECTION PROCESS

Meeting of a new Parliament

On the meeting of a new Parliament, returns to the eight writs for the general election must be laid upon the Table by the Clerk and the Members are then sworn. 1 After a general election the House must meet not later than 30 days after the day fixed for the return of the writs. 2 However, the House may meet as soon as the writs are returned and in recent Parliaments it has not been unusual for the House to meet before the date fixed for the return of writs. 3
