Mr SPENCE - The answers to the honorable member's questions are as follow : -

1.   Where the volume of work and the circumstances necessitate the raising of a nonofficial office to official status, a non-official P.M., who has been devoting the whole of his or her time to the work of the office, is thrown out of employment. In such cases the persons concerned have been engaged under agreement, and have, therefore, known that their employment was not permanent.

2.   In view of the provisions of the Commonwealth Public Service Act, it is difficult to find employment for persons in this category; but where it is practicable, the Department offers them employment in other semi-official offices.
