FOREIGN AFFAIRS, DEFENCE AND TRADE LEGISLATION COMMITTEE - 13/11/1997 - DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, DEFENCE AND TRADE - Program 2--Passport and Consular Services - Subprogram 2.1--Passport Services

CHAIR --Are there any questions on subprogram 2.1--passport services?

Senator HOGG --I do not know if this is the appropriate section or whether it should have gone back to Mr Dauth again. The issue is in relation to James Peng.

Ms Hewitt --That is actually a North Asia Division issue and comes under subprogram 1.1, unless it is consular.

Senator HOGG --I understood he was being supported by consular visits. Could I just have an update on that, please?

Mr Warner --Not a great deal has happened since we last spoke about this in Senate estimates. As you know, the government has made high level representations to the Chinese government on Mr Peng's case. We continue to have regular consular visits on Mr Peng. As I said to you last time, we think it is best, and he and his family think it is best, that we keep a low public profile on this issue while it winds its way through the Chinese bureaucracy.

Senator HOGG --On the last occasion I made a request to receive some private confirmation of what is happening from time to time. I would appreciate that. It saves me raising it in this forum.

Mr Warner --Certainly.
