Senator YOUNG —Is the Minister representing the Minister for Transport aware that some overseas airlines are seeking to use Adelaide Airport on an international basis? Can the Minister say whether facilities, particularly runways, at Adelaide Airport will be upgraded to accommodate planes such as DC10s and Boeing 747s? If it is intended to upgrade Adelaide Airport can the Minister say when this will be done?

Senator MESSNER —All honourable senators will appreciate Senator Young's particular interest in this matter. I know he has been following it through with great vigour. I have no particular information on whether 747s or DC10s will be allowed to land at Adelaide Airport. Some changes may be contemplated to the facilities at the airport with the possible introduction of wide-bodied jets by Trans-Australia Airlines or Ansett Airlines of Australia. I have no information at this stage about any decision on that matter. I will refer Senator Young's question to the Minister and ask him to bring down an early reply.
